Happy Idli day. March 30th is observed idli day worldwide. Idlis are easy to cook, easy to eat and easy to
digest. These qualities make idli the favourite of the busy families.
Idli is said to be the third most popular staple food in the world. Lack of ‘sophistication’ might have made idlis disappear from the star restaurants and eateries of the gen next. But that is passe’. Idli restaurants now beckon you at many airport halls. Many restaurants abroad, especially the US and gulf countries proudly serve the ‘meek’ idli now.
Economically, idli provides livelihood for myriad street vendors in India. In Ramassery, a village in Palakkad in Kerala, idli making is a major cottage industry. The village is a major tourist attraction too. The art of making the soft Ramassery idlis( to be patented soon) is a closely guarded secret among the families there.
